Corn in May?

I grew up thinking that people didn't eat corn until August. Our corn came from my dad's delicious garden, and it was never ready until the end of the summer (knee high by the 4th of July he always told us), and we ate it every night until it was gone. I have very fond memories of picking, shucking (okay sometimes not so fond), slathering in butter and devouring that golden goodness.

I remember being at Steve's house either before we were married or early in our marriage, and having corn on his dad's birthday (May 5th) and thinking they were crazy. Didn't they know corn wasn't ready until August? I thought for sure it would be gross, but of course, it WASN'T.

Then they all thought I was crazy when I started eating my corn like this:
It all started when I got braces and food was constantly getting stuck in my teeth. It just made eating corn a chore (because let's face it, even normal food gets stuck in those dang braces, but corn is way worse). This way I could still enjoy it and my teeth stayed clean. Over the years I have endured a lot of mocking about the way I eat corn, but habits are tough to break.

Last week in my basket there was a bunch of corn, and since I now know that it is good at the beginning of the summer, I was really excited. I thought Easton would think it was cool, but since Steve wasn't home for dinner yet, it was up to me to show him the "correct" way to eat it.

It felt good I gotta say. 15 years I have been missing out on this tradition. Everyone always told me it tasted better this way, and while I'm sure that is ridiculous, it was definitely more fun. And anything that gets Easton to eat is worth it in my book. See that pile of rice and beans on his plate? That's the reason he is alive. It's ridiculous how often we eat that stuff.
So just in case you're like me and you didn't know that corn was good in May...it is.

Ha, ha, that was funny. Cute pics. Yum, fresh corn from a garden? I must say that sounds much better than what I'm used to.

This is so funny because I totally feel the same way hahaha! When I see corn in the stores before august, I'm like- gross I bet that is SO not ready. hahahaha. But it's really nice to know that I can take the plunge early. because corn sounds delicious! And I always love how proud dad is of his corn.

And most importantly... I am SO GLAD that you have seen the light of eating it off of the cob!!!!! Isn't it just so much more summery!! hahaha. but I will say, you might be the queen of eating corn with a knife, I don't know if I've seen it elsewhere. So that's an acomplishment :)

Love the pictures and I CANNOT wait to be there!

The corn is in the ground and I'm holding out! You can look forward to having some when you come to visit in August. I'd have to see it come from a very good garden or maybe your basket before I could eat it before August, it just wouldn't feel right. That did look like it was good though and I'm glad to taught Easton the proper way to eat corn.

That's awesome! I don't think I've ever had fresh corn on the cob in May. I think I've seen some at the stores... I may have to check it out. [Though I'm guess you're warmer climate has a lot to do with it!]

Yumm....corn. I love you and your corn memories.

So, if steve wasn't home yet, who took the picture of you eating the corn? Very cute.

I have tried finding a co-op to join here. But we will be growing our own garden sans corn (we get plenty from my uncle who lives near portland). Anyway, I just bought some corn at the store (before you posted this) and it was disgusting and very disappointing to say the least. I am glad that yours was yummy!

I'm always a little wary of it early too, Em. It's a good reminder. We had it tonight and it was good, but it really is better in August, I'm convinced.

I get the braces thing, but I do hope you continue to eat it the right way, though. It kills me to cut it off the cob for Justin. It's his preferred method.
