A Whole Lot of Crazy

I love this picture because they are both smiling real smiles, not cheesy ones. I look at this picture several times a day on my phone, because it's my wallpaper, but also it helps remind me that I do love these kids even though they have both been CRAZY lately. Let's start with Easton.

* I think Easton takes after Steve a lot. He's quieter, sensitive and generally pretty soft spoken. Lately though, he has been the opposite; loud, defiant, mean, and DISOBEDIENT to the max. I'm left wondering where my sweet boy went. I think this all started happening right around when school started.
* He says things like, "whatever", " I don't care," and "I'm not gonna listen!"
* He has some killer mean looks he dishes out...if looks could kill...
* As far as I know, he behaves great at school and church. He saves all the naughty stuff for me.
* There have been days where I literally want to run away because I don't think I can handle it for one more second.

Now for Carly. I feel like she has a better excuse because she's only 2. And I still pretty much think she's a perfect princess. But don't let her bright blond hair, blue eyes and purple, sparkly toes fool you... she can be sassy.

* She wants to be big like Easton so she wants to do everything he does and it drives me crazy.
* These 2 fight over things like: who gets to turn off the tv, who gets to pick the show, who gets to close and open the garage door. Since when was a garage door opener that exciting?
* She picks up 5 year old things and talks like crazy and repeats everything, so I hear a lot of: "I don't WANT TO!" or "Nanna nanna boo boo." and any of Easton's other choice sayings.

I think the main problem lies with me though. I have had zero energy or patience and have been too lazy to really try and correct or discipline this behavior. I try, but after a couple days I get tired and give up. I keep hoping with Easton it's just a weird phase and soon my sweet boy will emerge, and Carly, well, she's 2.

I am open to suggestions though, so send me all of your brilliant parenting advice for defiant little 5 year olds. I think he's ready to have more responsibility, more chores, things like that...but again, there is an insane amount of laziness going on over here. But I promise there's a good reason for it, I bet you can guess:
* no energy
* major fatigue
* extreme moodiness
* patience is nonexistent
(is this not the recipe for mother of the year?)
* all I want to eat is hummus and cookies
* my pants don't fit anymore
* I don't just cry at some parts in Parenthood, but through the whole entire show
* generally feeling and acting crazy all of the time...much like my 5 year old

well, if it is what i think you're referring to, you have every right to be overwhelmed, exhausted, and cry every single day. just get through it. it's so. dang. hard. to raise your kids while growing a kid inside of you.

What? You're pregnant?!?!?! Haha, kidding, I'm so excited to meet number 3!

I have no advise for you, I'm sorry. I can whip them into shape when I come in exactly one month from today!!! Actually, probably not...I can't resist those sweet smiles and big blue eyes!

aaah! we are having the same problems over here (minus pregnancy, but that's not a problem, it's a huge YAY!)!!! i'm glad i'm not alone. nash has been unreal the last few weeks. i made the mistake of asking his teacher if he's been drama there, too, and she said yes. so sadly, it's not just me he's being terrible for. haven hasn't been as bad, she just lets nash get to her which always turns into huge fights and crying. SERENITY NOW!!! let's swap kids, somehow they are still nice to their friends through all this, right?

I'm excited for you and your family. As for Easton, my sweet Jenna did this when she started Kindergarten. I think it is more of an adjustment than we realize. I think they are tired, hungry, off their normal routine, and missing mom and home. I remember saying a lot of "I hope you don't act like that at school", "Where did you learn that", "If you learned it at school I'm not sure I want you to go back". I'm sure Carly is feeling the changes too. (All of them, missing brother, preparing for new one, Mom tired). I'm sure they will kick it soon. I think with some natural consequences and extra "I love you but I don't love your behavior" and mostly time, it should all go away. I hope it is comforting to know that you aren't the only one.
I miss you!

Easton Looks so big in this picture!! Sorry he's being a pill, and you SHOULD run away sometimes!! Leave them with Steve and take the night off. I'd say, at least once a week you should try to get out. Love you! Enjoy the cookies and hummus and take it easy!

First of all garage door openers are very exciting :) I love that picture. I think we should just trade kids every afternoon. I hate the attitude too. I have to admit that I have always loved Eastons dirty looks :)
Let's have a hummus and cookie party! I have pita chips :)

Are you hinting that you're pregnant? WIsh I had some advice. You'll be the one telling me what to do in 4 years, instead. Hope it gets better :)

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Pregnant!!!!!!!!! I am so so so so so so so so so happy about this. Not happy that you have to be pregnant and raise 2 children at the same time... that sounds torturous, but that there will be another Rogers baby who will be BFF with my baby! I woke up this morning counting down the days to your ultra sound! 4 days!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love that picture so much!!! They sound like 100% normal kids to me. And I've got to say, Carly sounds like the perfect girl to me. Cute, adorable, sweet, funny, and sassy!!!! Perfect combo! And the nana nana boo boo comment is hilarious!!! hahahaha!!!

As for Easton Boy, That boy has the most tender heart and he loves you so much!!! I'm sorry he's being naughty! But just look at that face and it'll be all better!!!!

I understand the unreasonable crying. Just ask Michael.

Love you!

You should probably go see a doctor cause those are some crazy symptoms. I'm a nurse, and I'm stumped.

That picture is so adorable, I still have the one of you guys in Easton's room for my wallpaper, soooo cute! Easton does look taller, I think he has grown since I was there.

I'm trying really hard to think back on what you are going through because I KNOW I did but it's way back there. I liked Mel's advice a lot and I'm so glad you have great friends because I think that is the only reason I am sane today. Am I sane? I think, sorta. Also, I do remember loving reading about behavior and parenting, I always think that helps keep you motivated. Your doing great though Em, you and Steve are awesome with the kids.

Your ultra sound is in 4 days??? Awesome! Love you ALL so much and tell that naughty boy Easton to shape up right now.

Carol and Bruce said...

Oh, and hummus? Since when do you like hummus? That just sounds awful.

Jill said...

Mmmmm, hummus and cookies.

I totally agree with the "this too shall pass" advice. You won't always be so tired and impatient and Easton will settle into a better routine. The whole copying the older sibling hasn't gone away at our house. Sometimes that's a good thing and sometimes it's bad.

It's so awful to be the mom taking the brunt of the tantrums. I think they hold it all in at school and then it all explodes in mom's face when they get home. One reason I am just NOT down with full day kindergarten. It's just too much.

Can't wait to hear about the ultrasound! Just remember to give yourself a break. Love you!

Congrats! 3 is definitely fun! My kids had an adjustment period when school started this year. But, they settled into a routine quickly and I am sure Easton will too. Hope you get more energy soon. How far along are you?

I am glad to hear my 5 year old isn't the only sassy rude kid. I seriously can't handle it and don't know how to get things back to my sweet kid. Let me know if you figure it out. Love those cute smiles.
