Cupcakes 4 Cancer

Next Saturday I will be running (okay fine, probably walking mostly) my first 5K. I realize to those of you out there who are serious runners, this is no big deal. I've haven't done a race since the good ol' Butte to Butte when I was like 10. But if there's anything that could get me off my butt to hit the pavement, it's this cute face...Greg is 6 and has cancer. Some awesome girls in our ward are putting together this 5k fundraiser, Cupcakes 4 Cancer to help ease the burden this may have on their family. Cancer is terrible, horrible, and no good for anyone, but when I heard about Greg in Primary one day, I just lost it. I think it's because I have a 4 year old boy of my own and can't imagine having to see him go through something so intense, painful, and emotionally and physically draining. My heart aches for Greg and his family.

A few years ago, my cousin lost her battle with cancer. Last year, my good friend Amy was diagnosed with cancer, went through chemo, and after a long, hard year of being weak and sick is on her way to being healthy. These are a couple of the stories that affected me, but I remember feeling very helpless and like there was nothing I could do besides pray for them. I'll be thinking of them as I run (/walk), as well as for Greg.

I know that me trying to run 3.2 miles isn't going to make Greg's cancer go away, and it won't make the treatments any easier...but hopefully that with all of us together, and the support we have gotten already from hundreds of people, we will be able to give he and his family some help and encouragement while they go through this difficult time.

If anyone in the area is interested in participating, here is the website with all of the information. There are several different races for different levels, and fun stuff for kids too (100 yard dash!). If you don't live in the area but wish to help, there is a place for donations on the same website.

I'm so grateful for the girls who set this up, and for the opportunity I have to be a part of it.

Seriously one of my worst fears as a parent. It would be so hard to see your child suffer like that. Hope the run goes great!

Oh Gol, I'm crying again. This is so sweet. I wish so bad that I was going to be there that weekend! Because I would be so in! You are going to do great and you will feel awesome at the end for lots of reasons. We'll be praying for that sweet little guy :)

How many times have I thought to myself, I should do something? A million! I am proud of you for "getting of your duff" and getting involoved especially knowing how you HATE to run. I'll be thinking of you and hope it all goes well.
